Crawford County awarded home repair grants to help residents

Help is now available for Crawford County residents who need financial assistance with home repairs.

The county, in partnership with the City of Bucyrus and the City of Galion, has received a two-year, $1 million grant from the Ohio Development Services Agency, Office of Community Development for the Community Housing Impact & Preservation (CHIP) program, which provides home repairs for low to moderate-income households.

“We encourage any Crawford County homeowner who needs home repairs to learn more about how this program can help,” said Crawford County Commissioner Doug Weisenauer.

CHIP covers home repairs that include electrical, plumbing, roof, HVAC, ADA modifications and other system upgrades, provided at no or minimal cost to the resident. CHIP also offers home rehabilitations for more extensive repair work. Rehabilitations are largely grant-funded, with a portion of the cost covered through a no-interest deferred loan to the homeowner that must be paid at the time of title transfer. Income eligibility and other guidelines apply.

The CHIP program is administered through Great Lakes Community Action Partnership (GLCAP), which has operated home repair programs in northwest and north-central Ohio since 1994. In 2019, GLCAP provided home repairs and rehabilitation to 142 homes in a ten-county region.
