Meals on Wheels serves 469 seniors last year

The Great Lakes Community Action Partnership (GLCAP) Meals on Wheels program provided nutrition to 469 Sandusky County senior residents in 2022, making for a total of 61,568 meals served.

The program provides home-delivered lunches Monday-Thursday for eligible homebound seniors ages 60 and older. While seniors are welcome to make donations for meals, the program serves all eligible seniors, regardless of their ability to afford the cost of meals.

“We are committed to serving all seniors who qualify for Meals on Wheels,” Senior Services Director Robin Richter said.

Along with providing meals, the regular weekday visits from Meals on Wheels drivers helps ensure that clients are safe and healthy while in their homes. If a client does not come to the door as expected during a driver’s regular visit, the driver can notify the family to check and see if assistance is needed.

In recent years, GLCAP Senior Services has also expanded its virtual programs for seniors, offering book clubs, art classes, wellness courses, and other activities that seniors may join from the comfort of their homes. These programs are offered to all seniors—including those in the Meals on Wheels program—and help participants stay connected to one another and the community.

“Whether they are a Meals on Wheels participant or a regular guest at one of our senior centers, we want to make sure that every senior is included in our programs,” Richter said.
