Meals on Wheels serves more than 400 seniors in 2024
The Great Lakes Community Action Partnership (GLCAP) Meals on Wheels program provided 438 seniors with daily meals in 2024.
The program supports home-delivered meals for homebound Sandusky County seniors ages 60 and over. Hot lunchtime meals are delivered Monday-Thursday, with a box lunch provided for the Friday meal.
The Sandusky County Meals on Wheels program is supported through a combination of funding from local, federal, and private sources. The Sandusky County Senior Levy funds the majority of the program, with additional support provided by federal Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) and Older Americans Act funding, as well as support from local United Way of Sandusky County and private donations.
“While much of our Meals on Wheels service depends on levy funding, we do utilize other funding sources to maintain the program,” GLCAP Senior Services Director Robin Richter said. “This combination of support allows us to ensure that every senior who needs the help of Meals on Wheels can be served.”
By delivering daily meals, Meals on Wheels drivers also provide a safety check to ensure that seniors are safe.
“Oftentimes, seniors who are homebound don’t have many socialization opportunities,” Richter said. “Our drivers provide that much-needed socialization. Also, if a senior does not answer the door as expected or appears to be in distress, our drivers can seek help.”
